Alhaji Buba Galadima, a senior figure in the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and prominent member of the Kwankwasiyya political movement, has condemned the proposed United States sanctions reportedly linked to former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, describing the move as unfair and politically motivated.
Speaking on Thursday during an appearance on ARISE Television, Galadima dismissed allegations suggesting financial links to terrorism or actions tied to the implementation of Sharia law in Kano, insisting that Kwankwaso’s record does not support such claims.
“I learnt of it yesterday through my son. He sent me a clip, and later a lot of people started bombarding me with questions.
“They alleged that Kwankwaso financed terrorism because he promulgated Sharia law in Kano and that blasphemy became a capital offence,” Galadima said.
He described the claims as baseless and damaging to the former governor’s integrity.
“I said that is unfair, most unfair to Kwankwaso, most unfair to his person and most unfair to his integrity. He is a peaceful Nigerian, he added
The NNPP chieftain further argued that the alleged sanctions appear to target Kwankwaso as a political opponent ahead of the 2027 general elections rather than being founded on objective evidence.

“What we see is an increase of election to southern in 2027,” he stated.
Galadima also referenced what he described as prior rumours that Kwankwaso could face arrest or investigation if he refused to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). According to him, there had been speculation that agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) or the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) might be used against him.
“We know, we were told, there were rumours all over that Kwankwaso was going to be arrested if he refused to defect to the APC, that Kwankwaso is going to be this is going to happen to him, that EFccis going to look for him, that ICPC is going to look for him.
“Surprisingly, the matter came offshore, that is in US and we wonder from where did they get that story,” he added
Defending Kwankwaso’s record, Galadima recalled that during his tenure as governor in 2003, the former Kano leader aligned politically with then-President Olusegun Obasanjo at a time when other northern governors backed Muhammadu Buhari. He claimed that the decision cost Kwankwaso his re-election bid.
“Rabiu Kwankwaso was the victim od Sharia because he was governor in 2003 and decided to go all hug with general Obasanjo as president when othetr governors in Northern nigeria found it expident to tell the world, to tell their supporters that they can vote for them as governors and vote for Buhari as president… that cost him his reelection as governor of Kano stste and there are evidences to show,” he said
Galadima also maintained that despite the complexities of Kano’s political landscape, Kwankwaso protected minority and tribal groups in the state during his administration.
“Kwankwaso was one of the person despite the disparities of Kano Politics, that has protected all minority groups and all tribal groups in Kano, he concluded.
