Beyond the pain, political controversy and anxiety that surrounded the kidnapping and eventual rescue of the students and teachers in Oyo State, there are compelling reasons to be grateful. What began as a national tragedy ended in a manner that offers both relief and hope.
The most important outcome is that the victims are back home. That, above every political argument, is what truly matters. With the immediate crisis behind us, the nation can now reflect soberly on the entire episode, despite the needless political narratives that many leaders across the divide sought to attach to it.
As we celebrate the safe return of the students and teachers, we must also honour those who paid the ultimate price during the operation. Their sacrifice should never be forgotten. At the same time, we should acknowledge the professionalism, courage, and efficiency displayed by our security agencies in executing a rescue mission that limited casualties and brought the ordeal to a successful conclusion.
The operation is a clear demonstration that Nigeria’s security forces possess the competence and operational capacity required to confront complex security challenges when properly equipped and coordinated. It also validates the enormous investments that have been made in strengthening the country’s security infrastructure.
The challenge now is for the government to build on this success. The operation should serve as a template for deeper inter-agency collaboration, better intelligence sharing, and a more coordinated national strategy against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of violent criminality.

Nigeria cannot attain meaningful progress without peace and stability, regardless of which political party occupies power. National security should never become a partisan contest. At moments of grave security challenges, citizens and political actors alike have a responsibility to stand behind legitimate efforts to protect lives and preserve the nation’s stability, rather than undermine morale through needless sensationalism or narratives that diminish the sacrifices of those on the front lines.
No government, anywhere in the world, can ever completely satisfy its critics, particularly in matters as complex as national security. That reality, however, should not distract any administration from doing what is right. Governments must remain focused on delivering results while remaining open to constructive ideas from the opposition, especially on issues where national interest transcends partisan considerations.
It is increasingly evident that the insurgency and banditry that have plagued parts of northern Nigeria over the past decade did not flourish in a vacuum. The state must continue to identify, expose and prosecute every individual or network that finances, sponsors, or exploits insecurity for political or personal gain. Until those behind these criminal enterprises are held accountable, the country will remain vulnerable to recurring threats.
The rescue of the Oyo students should therefore be remembered not merely as a successful security operation, but as a reminder that when purpose, coordination, and national resolve come together, even the gravest challenges can be overcome. It should inspire renewed confidence in our institutions and reinforce the collective determination to build a safer and more secure Nigeria.
