The former Students Union Government (SUG) president of D.S. Adegbenro Polytechnic, Itori-Ewekoro, Ogun State, Abiola Francis Gabriel, has emerged as the new chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in the state.
Gabriel was elected alongside Hezekiah Adeola as the secretary of NANS in the state at a convention held at D.S. Adegbenro Polytechnic over the weekend. Sodeeq Hassan was re-elected for another term as the public relations officer (PRO).
Speaking after the election, the new Ogun NANS chairman commended the students for the orderly manner in which they conducted themselves during the election.
Gabriel also lauded his predecessor, Francis Adeyanju, for his exemplary leadership while in office, assuring that he would continue on the path of progress, peace, and cordiality navigated by the immediate past chairman.
The NANS chairman promised that his leadership would work assiduously to ensure that the welfare of Ogun students receives special attention from the government and other stakeholders.
He added that his administration would maintain robust engagement with the government and the management of tertiary institutions in the state to foster cordial relationships capable of enhancing the welfare and well-being of students.

Gabriel, who called for the support of students in the state, stressed that he would promote purposeful leadership by ensuring that every student’s rights and privileges are protected and guaranteed.
He praised the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, for his administration’s interventions and significant achievements in the education sector, particularly in tertiary institutions.
Gabriel urged the governor not to relent in his efforts to reposition the education sector in the state, emphasising that the welfare of Ogun State students should remain paramount.
Addressing the new Ogun NANS executives and students at the convention, the Special Assistant to the Ogun State Governor on Student Matters, Azeez Adeyemi, appreciated the students for their endurance and composure during the current economic challenges.
He noted that the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government has started to yield positive results, particularly through the student loan scheme, which has helped mitigate the financial challenges faced by many students across the country.
Adeyemi assured the students that Governor Abiodun would always be ready to listen to their concerns and prioritise their needs, urging them to remain partners in progress with the government at all levels.
While encouraging the new NANS leadership in the state to be constructive in their criticism of government policies and civil in their demands, the governor’s aide stated: “As one of the few groups that fought for the democracy we are enjoying today as Nigerians, issues affecting students will always be attended to by the government and relevant stakeholders.”
