The Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi (FUTIA), Akwa Ibom State, Prof Leo Daniel, has warned matriculating students against cultism and cyber crimes.
Speaking at the second matriculation ceremony of the institution yesterday, Prof Daniel reminded the students that they were admitted to be trained to tackle technological problems facing the nation adding that the institution will not tolerate any deviation from the objectives.
“Let me stress that your admission into this institution is a major milestone in your preparation for the future of many possibilities for you, your parents, families, communities and the nation but this will, however, be dependent on your level of commitment to your studies, research, innovations, academic excellence, sportsmanship and extracurricular activities.
Daniel explained that FUTIA is one of the specialized institutions established by the federal government for academic excellence in areas of science, technology, engineering, innovation and research.
“We are committed to giving you the best training so that you can become useful members of the society upon your graduation.
“We have well trained lecturers and faculties that will enable you come out tops in your respective fields. I want to add that you are privileged to be among the 2nd batch of students admitted into the University following the pioneer set admitted in the last academic session.
“Please note that the Governing Council and Management of the University have zero tolerance for examination malpractice, cultism, indecent dressing, drug abuse, cyber-crimes and other social vices.
“Any student found wanting will face appropriate disciplinary measures including outright rustication from the University where applicable”.
He appreciated parents and guardians for their investment in the education of their children and wards, particularly for choosing FUTIA over other institutions to train their children and promised to justify such trust by training the students to be worthy both in learning and character.
The Vice Chancellor also appreciated other stakeholders of the institution including the Federal Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), JAMB and Nigerian Education Loan Fund for their contributions in the development of the university.
He assured the matriculating students that the institution has approved and reserved automatic employment for First Class graduates of the university and other prizes as a motivation to boost academic excellence and competition among students.
A total of 1000 students took the matriculation oath for 24 degree programmes of the university.
