Governorship aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State, Dr. Leloonu Nwibubasa, has accused suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara of surrendering to his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, and abandoning the people of the state after months of political confrontation.
Speaking during an interview, Nwibubasa said Fubara’s recent remarks confirming his reconciliation with Wike amounted to a betrayal of Rivers people who stood by him throughout the political crisis.
According to him, the governor had built public support by portraying himself as a leader determined to free the state from what he described as Wike’s political dominance, only to later return to the same political camp.
“Governor Fubara going into a negotiation with Wike and returning to say that there is a reconciliation and that he has handed over things back to his godfather was his surrender,” he said.
Nwibubasa argued that Rivers people rallied behind Fubara because they believed he was committed to defending the state’s interests, recalling that the governor had repeatedly assured residents he would resist political interference, even at great personal cost.
“The pain in what the governor did yesterday is the deceit, the long-term deceit, which he has deceived not just his supporters, but the people of Rivers State,” he stated.

He further alleged that the governor had abandoned the principles he once claimed to defend by embracing those he previously criticised.
“It is a shame that a man upon which leadership was entrusted can, in a moment of time, turn 360 degrees, throwing the people under the bus.”
The ADC governorship hopeful maintained that Fubara had lost the moral authority to lead, arguing that leadership requires consistency, vision and the confidence of followers.
“If the governor himself has no place to go, because he has lost his leadership capacity, he’s only a governor, he’s no longer a leader.”
Nwibubasa called on Rivers people to chart a new political course, insisting the state must be liberated from what he described as entrenched political control.
He also urged residents to reject leaders who, according to him, abandon the ideals they campaigned on after securing public support.
