FTSE frontier status opens door to more investments

The Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX Group) has described Nigeria’s return to Frontier Market status under FTSE Russell as an opportunity to attract more international investment and deepen liquidity in the country’s capital market.

FTSE Russell, in a market notice issued on August 27, 2026, confirmed that Nigeria’s reclassification from Unclassified to Frontier Market status will take effect from the opening of trading on September 21, 2026. The development followed an assessment of Nigeria’s capital market, including the implementation of the T+1 settlement cycle introduced on June 1, 2026.

FTSE Russell said its review found that “no material settlement, operational or funding issues had been observed since the implementation of the T+1 settlement cycle.”

The confirmation effectively clears the way for Nigeria’s return to the FTSE Frontier Market classification after the country was removed from the index in 2024 amid concerns over foreign exchange liquidity, capital repatriation and market accessibility.

Nigeria was placed on the FTSE Watch List in October 2025 following improvements in those areas, while FTSE Russell announced in April 2026 that the country would return to Frontier Market status in September, subject to a further assessment.

NGX Group managing director/chief executive officer, Temi Popoola, said the reclassification would only be meaningful if the increased international visibility translates into greater participation and capital inflows.

“This is an important moment for Nigeria’s capital market. But the real significance of returning to Frontier Market status is the opportunity it creates for the next phase of our market’s development,” Popoola said.

He added that “we have to turn greater international visibility into broader participation, deeper liquidity and more capital for Nigerian businesses. Our ambition is to build a market that is increasingly competitive globally and more relevant to Nigeria’s economic growth.”

The additional FTSE Russell assessment became necessary following Nigeria’s transition from T+2 to T+1 settlement. Market participants had expressed concerns that the shorter settlement cycle could create a de facto prefunding requirement for international institutional investors and affect their participation in the market.

In response, NGX Group, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and other market stakeholders engaged FTSE Russell and global custodians to address the concerns and provide evidence on the operation of the new settlement framework.

An NGX Group delegation also met international investors and custodians in July 2026 to explain the operation of T+1 and efforts to align Nigeria’s market infrastructure with international standards.

Following the review, the FTSE Russell Index Governance Board confirmed that Nigeria’s reclassification would proceed as scheduled, with the decision also supported by feedback from its Equity Country Classification Advisory Committee.

The return to Frontier Market status comes as Nigerian authorities and market institutions seek to improve the country’s access to international capital and strengthen the role of the capital market in financing economic growth.

As part of its engagement with government, the NGX Group Board met with President Bola Tinubu on August 6, 2026, to discuss ongoing market reforms and the role of the capital market in mobilising long-term capital for the economy.

The group said the next key step would be the publication of the FTSE Frontier Index Series annual indicative review files for September 2026 on September 2, which will reflect Nigeria’s new classification.

The reclassification is expected to increase Nigeria’s visibility among global investors tracking frontier-market indices, although the extent to which it translates into actual capital inflows will depend on sustained improvements in market accessibility, liquidity, settlement infrastructure and the broader investment environment.
