The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has mourned the demise of about six members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists en route from Yola, Adamawa State, to Gombe State.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, in a statement yesterday, described the incident “as a devastating blow to the media family and the nation at large,” noting that the loss of journalists, voices of truth and conscience under such tragic circumstances, is deeply painful and unacceptable.
Mohammed affirmed the FRSC’s solidarity with the NUJ in this moment of immense sorrow and assured that the Corps is closely monitoring developments, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, to support emergency response and follow-up actions.
The Corps Marshal reiterated a strong call for strict adherence to road safety rules, particularly vehicle roadworthiness, tyre integrity, and responsible speed management, stressing that preventable factors continue to account for avoidable tragedies on Nigerian roads.
While admonishing the motoring public to cooperate with the Corps in accomplishing the mission of reducing carnage on our roads, he further stated that, as an organisation with the mandate to manage road safety, emphasis has been placed more on enforcement, public education, and collaboration with other stakeholders.
