From prison inmate to CEO: The extraordinary story of Xolane Ndhlovu

Not many people can turn the adversities of life into stepping stones to greater pedestals. But Xolane Ndhlovu made it seem like it is the easiest thing to do. Not only did he put his life together while he was inside the jail for attempted murder and illegal possession of guns, he subsequently went on to become a model citizen. Today, he is not just a billionaire, he is one of the emerging business moguls of Africa.

Some of the best-known rags-to-riches stories are not as inspiring as the rise of Ndhlovu, a poor boy with a humble beginning. He started life as a young boy washing dishes to survive, but fate smiled at him and he got a respite when he became a disc jockey and was known famously as Ziggy.

Unfortunately, the little success went into his head and he got mixed up with bad gangs, acquiring fearsome notoriety and ending up in prison for gang-related crimes.

All things considered, the time he spent in the prison was a life-transforming experience, the turnaround moment being his encounter with Richard Branson’s biography, “Losing my Virginity.” According to him, “the book drastically changed my mindset.”

Right from inside the prison, he amended his ways by changing his lifestyle and cutting off his ties to the gang and subsequently devoted his time and attention to reading about entrepreneurship.

With his options limited behind bars, he started investing systematically in start-up tech companies. And as fate would have it, his gambit paid off as he was able to gain millions of dollars profit from his investments in cryptocurrency. From there, the rest, as they say, is history.

Today, Xolane Ndhlovu is a case study of how to turn around life for the better. While he remains the primary investor in blockchain companies such as Binance, the largest crypto exchange company, Tron Foundation, NPXS and Holochain, he has expanded his empire to include Ziggys Foundation and the UMEH Group Limited, where he is the executive chairman.
