In the bustling landscape of Nigeria’s entertainment industry, few names have carved such a distinctive path as Winifred Iguwa.
The filmmaker and casting director has become a formidable force, bridging the gap between local storytelling and international cinematic standards through her exceptional work across television and film.
Iguwa’s recent achievements speak volumes about her artistic vision and professional expertise. Her casting work on the psychological thriller “Suspicion” earned the film multiple nominations at the 2025 Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA), including Best Movie, Best Lead Actor, and Best Supporting Actor categories.
The film, now streaming on Prime Video, masterfully weaves traditional African mysticism with contemporary thriller elements—a testament to her ability to honour cultural authenticity while appealing to global audiences.
Her collaboration on “Almajiri” further demonstrates her commitment to meaningful storytelling. The film, which explores the harsh realities of internally displaced children in northern Nigeria, secured five nominations at the 2022 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA).
What sets Iguwa apart is not just her eye for talent—she discovered the film’s breakout star who earned a Best Young/Promising Actor nomination—but her dedication to authentic representation of Nigerian experiences.
Currently pursuing a Masters in Media Production at York St John University in the UK, Iguwa has created “Idia,” a deeply personal short film that explores cultural identity through the lens of a young dancer reconnecting with her Benin heritage. The project represents a bold artistic statement: that African narrative possess universal appeal when told with genuine emotion and cinematic sophistication.
“I wanted to show how our heritage can be a source of strength, even in places far away from home,” Iguwa explains about her latest work. “It’s about finding confidence in what makes us different, and sharing that with the world.”
Her professional journey spans over seven years, during which she has served as Content Director for Tiger Films Republic, working on ZeeWorld’s “Dance Naija Dance,” and as Series Creator and Head Writer for RAVE FILMS, where she spearheaded production of a 260-episode telenovela “VENGE.”
What distinguishes Iguwa in Nigeria’s competitive entertainment landscape is her versatility. She seamlessly transitions between directing, casting, and content creation while maintaining an unwavering focus on quality storytelling.
