The Nigerian Fire Extinguisher Control (NFEC) has named Dr. Enema Onojah John, a University of Uyo-trained pharmacognosist and artificial intelligence innovator, as the sole recipient of its 2024 “Trailblazer in Community Safety and Tech Education Award.”

The prestigious national award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated an exceptional ability to merge scientific advancement with tangible community impact, a description officials say perfectly encapsulates Dr. John’s diverse body of work.

In a statement from the NFEC headquarters in Abuja, Director-General Bode Oladipo praised the selection, highlighting the unique nature of Dr. John’s contributions.

“Dr. John exemplifies the modern, multidisciplinary approach to public safety that Nigeria needs,” said Oladipo.

“His deep research into natural anti-inflammatory compounds has direct applications for treating fire-related injuries like burns and smoke inhalation, while his AI platforms offer a new frontier for mass safety education. He is precisely the kind of leader this award was created to celebrate.”

About the Award: A National Honor for Cross-Sector Innovation
The “Trailblazer in Community Safety and Tech Education Award” is one of Nigeria’s most selective honors in the public safety domain.

Conferred annually to a single individual, the award is national in scope, with nominees drawn from academia, technology, civil service, and community leadership across all 36 states.

The criteria for selection are exceptionally rigorous. Candidates must demonstrate proven leadership in public safety awareness, original scientific or technological achievements with real-world applications, and a commitment to empowering communities through education and technology.

According to the NFEC, the award is often not conferred if no nominee meets the high standard of creating a measurable, cross-sector impact. Dr. John joins a select group of past honorees that includes top engineers, public health officials, and technology pioneers who have demonstrated a similar commitment to national development.

A Scientist Bridging Disciplines for Public Good
Dr. John, who holds a Ph.D. in Pharmacognosy, has built a distinguished career on two fronts. In the laboratory, his research focuses on isolating bioactive compounds from indigenous Nigerian plants for therapeutic use.

His work on the analgesic properties of pepper fruit, for example, has been published in numerous international journals and is seen as a promising step toward developing safer, locally-sourced pain relief alternatives.

Simultaneously, he has become a force in the technology sector, founding several successful AI-driven companies, including Zeeg AI and Legal Bridge Partners LLC. It is this unique ability to connect his scientific mindset with scalable technology that caught the award committee’s attention.

Relevance and Significance of the Award

The NFEC emphasized that Dr. John’s recognition is a testament to his holistic approach to safety. While his research into anti-inflammatory agents could one day lead to better clinical outcomes for burn victims, his educational platforms, like Learn Afrique, provide the infrastructure to deploy safety training modules on a national scale.

“This award is a profound honor,” Dr. John told reporters. “My goal has always been to show that the rigorous, systems-based thinking we apply in the lab can be used to solve real-world problems, whether it’s developing new medicines or building systems that keep communities informed and safe. True safety is proactive, and that requires both scientific innovation and effective education. I am grateful to the NFEC for recognizing the importance of that connection.”

This national award solidifies Dr. Enema John’s standing not only as a leading scientist in his field but as a visionary whose work creates a vital bridge between academic research, technology, and the well-being of the Nigerian public.
