United States-based Nigerian academic and columnist, Dr. Farooq Kperogi has berated those criticising former presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore for scampering to safety after security agents fired gunshots at Monday’s #FreeNnamdiKanu protests in Abuja.
Some Nigerians had taken to social media to mock Sowore after a video circulated showing the activist and other protesters running after sporadic gunfire by police operatives.
Reacting in a Facebook post, Kperogi questioned the rationale behind mocking someone endangering his own life to defend the rights of others.
He said, “I honestly can’t understand why some Nigerians are mocking Omoyele Sowore for retreating after security forces fired what sounded like live rounds during the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja today.

“They’re cynically framing it as cowardice. Really?
“So bravery now means standing unarmed before flying bullets? And if he had died, they’d have called him foolhardy.
“You may disagree with his politics, which is entirely legitimate, but you can’t deny that Sowore has the courage of his convictions.
“He’s out there risking his life, comfort, safety and freedom for what he believes in, while most of his critics never step beyond their keyboards,” he said.
