Four Plateau footballers die in tragic Kanke auto accident

Four players from Lebwit Football Club in Kanke Local Government Area, Plateau State, and their driver died in a tragic accident on Tuesday, April 22, while returning from a friendly match in Pankshin.

Thirteen others were seriously injured, with seven treated and discharged and six still receiving treatment.

The deceased players were identified as Chabe Gontul, Shikritda Giswa, Nenyitwe Gopar, and Thomas, a corps member from Benue. The driver’s identity was not disclosed.

Plateau United Football Club General Manager Habila Hoses Mutla expressed grief over the loss of young talent, calling for prayers and support for the affected families and the injured. “We extend our heartfelt sympathy to all affected families and call on well-meaning individuals and institutions to support the ongoing medical care and recovery process,” he said.

Kanke Local Government Chairman Lapching Ezekiel Golime, on behalf of the Plateau Football Association and Governor Caleb Mutfwang, also condoled the families, noting that the loss would be deeply felt by football lovers across the state.

“May their gentle souls rest in peace, and may God Almighty bring healing and comfort to the survivors, their families, and the entire Plateau football community,” Mutla added.
