Foul odour hospitalises students, teachers in Ijebu-Ode

From Laide Raheem, Abeokuta

Several students and teachers from Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Ijebu-Ode, were reportedly rushed to the hospital on Wednesday for medical attention after inhaling a nauseating odour.

The Sun gathered that the incident occurred during school hours when students and teachers suddenly detected an offensive smell, causing discomfort, breathing difficulties, and panic within the school premises.

Some of the affected students and staff members were subsequently taken to the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, where they received medical treatment.

No fewer than 30 students were hospitalised after a similar episode involving an unidentified substance reportedly affected the same school in Ijebu-Ode in April.

The incident prompted emergency responses from health officials and school authorities, while investigations were launched to determine the source of the contamination.

Parents who rushed to the school following Wednesday’s incident expressed fears over what appears to be a recurring environmental or public health challenge. They called on relevant authorities to carry out comprehensive investigations and implement measures capable of preventing future occurrences.

As of the time of filing this report, government authorities, environmental experts, and emergency management agencies had yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the latest incident.

The repeated occurrence of these mysterious odour incidents has raised serious concerns about environmental safety around schools in Ijebu-Ode, with stakeholders demanding urgent action to identify the source of the problem and guarantee the safety of students, teachers, and residents.
