Algeria has announced three days of national mourning following the death of former president Liamine Zeroual, who passed away at the age of 84.

According to the Algerian Presidency, Zeroual died at a military hospital in Algiers after a prolonged illness. Flags are to be flown at half-mast nationwide in his honour.

Born on July 3, 1941, in Batna, Zeroual was a career soldier who served in the National Liberation Army during the country’s struggle for independence from France.

He rose to prominence during a turbulent period in Algeria’s history, leading a transitional government amid a civil conflict before organising the country’s first multi-party presidential election in 1995, which he won decisively.

Liamine Zeroual, however, cut short his tenure in 1998, paving the way for his successor, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who went on to lead the country for two decades.

Despite stepping away from politics, Zeroual remained widely respected in Algeria for his role in steering the nation through a difficult era.
