Ebonyi State has lost one of its most respected traditional rulers, His Royal Highness, Ezeogo Elder Dr. Agom Eze, Igboezekuna I of Igboeze Onicha. He passed away at the age of 92.

In a statement signed by Samuel Eze and Agom Eze, his family described him as “a revered leader, a beloved father, grandfather, and custodian of our cherished traditions,” adding that “his wisdom and leadership earned him the respect and admiration of all, including us, his family.”

Ezeogo Elder Agom Eze was a key figure in the creation of Ebonyi State on October 1, 1996, and the first person from the present-day Ebonyi State to earn a Ph.D degree.

He dedicated his life to public service, taking on leadership roles that shaped policies and impacted lives.

Over the years, he held several prominent positions, including Chairman of the Ebonyi State Traditional Rulers Council, Chairman of the Civil Service Commission in both Abia and Imo states, and a member of the Constitution Review Committee under Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan administration.

He also served as pro-chancellor of Ebonyi State and Abia State universities and taught Economics at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Beyond his role as a traditional leader, he played significant parts in government and business. He was a former Commissioner for Works, Lands, and Housing, as well as Commissioner for Education and Information in old Imo State.

In the financial sector, he served as Chairman and Director of Cooperative and Commerce Bank (CCB) and Director of Hallmark Assurance.

His family acknowledged the deep loss his passing had brought, saying: “His death leaves a void that will be difficult to fill, but we also celebrate his impactful life and the legacy he leaves behind.”
