Tragedy struck Asaba this week as flood following a heavy downpour claimed one life, the daughter of Mr Jovani Emephia from the Ministry of Information, Delta State. The flood ravaged several communities across Delta State.
The deceased, who was in her 300 level at the university and serving her industrial training with Asaba Specialist Hospital (ASH), was reportedly swept away by floodwaters around the Okpanam Road axis of the capital city after hours of torrential rainfall that lasted for two days.
Several communities in Asaba, Oshimili South, Ughelli, Warri, Ukwuani, Ndokwa East and Patani Local Government Areas have been submerged, with properties worth millions of naira destroyed.
Residents of Infant Jesus, Okwe, Oduke, and parts of Cable Point in Asaba and Umukwata community in Ukwuani Local Government Area were seen evacuating their homes as water took over their houses. Roads were rendered impassable, leaving motorists and commuters stranded for hours.
The Delta State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) is yet to issue an official statement, but the state Commissioner, Bureau for Special Duties, Hon. Etacherure Ejiiro Terry, and his entourage visited some areas to assess the level of damage.
Residents have appealed to the state government to come to their aid and to urgently clear blocked drainages to prevent further occurrences.
