Flood displaces 77, 460, destroys 3, 544 houses in 12 states, says NEMA

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), on Friday, released a preliminary report on the “devastating” effect of flood in 12 frontline states.

They included: Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Edo, Kogi, Anambra, Delta, Benue, Adamawa, Taraba, Rivers and Bayelsa states.

The report revealed that 77, 460 persons were displaced in 50 local government areas affected by the flood.

It added that 151 persons sustained several degrees of injury, while 70 persons were confirmed dead and 3,544 houses partially or totally destroyed by the flood in the affected states.

It also revealed that 60, 208 hectares of agricultural land were destroyed/damaged by the flood in the states.

NEMA, on Tuesday, declared flood situation in four states of Anambra, Delta, Kogi and Niger states, a national disaster, and reported that 327, 052 persons were affected in the states that witnessed the natural disaster.

The agency, in a statement released in Abuja, on Friday, regretted that only N3 billion has been made available to the agency out of N12 billion required to carter for the victims of the flood.

It appealed to Nigerians to assist the affected victims with temporary shelter, food and non food items, hygiene kits, family items, mosquito nets and medicines which are some of the major needs of the affected people.
