Five things to know about Nigeria’s Tax ID

A tax Identification Number (TIN) is a unique number assigned to individuals and businesses for tax purposes in the Country. It is issued by the Federal Inland Revenue Service and the Joint Tax Board.

Here are some things to know about TIN:

1. Applying for a TIN in Nigeria is a free process. No payments are required, and applicants must ensure that their contact details, including phone numbers and addresses, are accurate to avoid mistakes or complications.

2. To obtain a tax identification Number in Nigeria, you are required to provide specific documents depending on whether you’re an individual or a business.

Some of those documents include Accurate Date of Birth, Bank Verification Number (BVN), Registered Phone Number, Previous Tax Identification Number (if applicable), and CAC registration certificate.

Other essentials are Memorandum and Articles of Association, valid means of identification (e.g., passport or national ID), Proof of business address and a few others.

3. The Tax Identification Number is closely linked to your National Identification Number (NIN) for individuals and your corporate affairs commission registration for businesses.

4. The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) is the Nigerian government agency responsible for assessing, collecting, and accounting for taxes.

The FIRS issues TINs to ensure proper tax administration and compliance.

With TIN, the FIRS can identify taxpayers and track their tax transactions across various activities.

5. Businesses aiming to work with the government must have a TIN. It is a key requirement for bidding on contracts, accessing government services, and receiving payments from public sector clients; a business with a valid TIN is seen as legitimate and credible.
