Firm unveils new phone series

Phone maker, Xiaomi, has officially launched its Redmi Note 17 smartphone series in Nigeria, with battery life and longer software support emerging as key features of the new devices.

The series comprises the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G, Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G, Redmi Note 17 Pro and Redmi Note 17.

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G is equipped with a 10,000mAh battery and 100W charging technology.

The company said the battery is designed to last up to six years of typical use.

The company is also promising up to six years of security updates for the series, potentially allowing users to keep the devices for longer before needing to replace them.

The focus on device lifespan comes as smartphones have become increasingly important to everyday activities in Nigeria, including mobile banking, business transactions, education, communication, navigation and entertainment.

Battery capacity and durability have also become more important considerations for consumers who rely heavily on their smartphones throughout the day, particularly in an environment where replacing devices can be costly.

Speaking at the launch, Xiaomi Nigeria Country Manager, Mr Vandy, said the company was seeking to combine improved smartphone capabilities with longer-term usability.

The Redmi Note 17 series will compete with brands including Samsung, Tecno, Infinix and other manufacturers.

Beyond battery capacity, factors such as pricing, processing power, cameras, software support and after-sales service are likely to influence how the new devices perform in the market.

The Redmi Note 17 series is available through Xiaomi’s authorised retail partners in Nigeria.
