Fire Service warns FCT residents to prepare for floods

As rainfall continues to intensify across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Controller, Federal Fire Service (FFS), FCT Command, Muhammed Anas, has cautioned residents to take precautions against flooding.

Anas gave the warning in a statement issued in Abuja, noting that the heavy and persistent rains being experienced in the territory called for heightened vigilance, particularly in low-lying areas, riverbanks and communities with inadequate drainage systems.

He stressed that flooding was often exacerbated by human activities, emphasising that safeguarding lives and property was a shared responsibility.

The controller identified building on floodplains, waterways and drainage channels, as well as blocking or covering drainage systems with structures, kiosks and shops, as major contributors to flooding.

He, therefore, urged residents to desist from such practices.

Other activities that contribute to flooding, according to him, include dumping refuse in drains, gutters, canals and waterways; sand dredging; and indiscriminate excavation near rivers and streams.

He also listed the erection of buildings without approved plans or adequate drainage provisions, poor construction of roads and culverts that obstruct the natural flow of water, as well as farming and construction along riverbanks and in flood-prone areas.

Anas further advised residents to contribute to efforts to mitigate the effects of flooding by regularly clearing drains, gutters and their surroundings of refuse and debris.

He urged residents to avoid settling or constructing buildings in flood-prone and low-lying areas, monitor weather forecasts and heed flood alerts issued by relevant authorities.

The controller also warned residents against crossing flooded roads, bridges, streams or rivers, whether on foot or in vehicles, stressing that children should be kept away from floodwaters, drains, rivers and open culverts.

He advised residents to switch off electrical appliances and avoid contact with electrical installations in flooded areas.

“In the event of flooding, residents are advised to remain calm and move immediately to higher ground or another safe location.

“Switch off the power supply at the mains and avoid touching electrical appliances, wires or other electrical installations. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters, as even shallow water can be dangerous.

“Move valuables, important documents, food supplies and other essential items to higher levels where possible. Keep children, elderly persons and persons with disabilities safe and evacuate them first where necessary.

“Avoid drinking or using floodwater, as it may be contaminated.

“Immediately contact the FFS or other emergency responders for assistance. Return home only after the area has been declared safe by the relevant authorities,” he charged.

Anas reaffirmed the commitment of the FFS, FCT Command, to responding swiftly to emergencies and safeguarding lives and property across the territory.

He appealed to residents to cooperate with emergency responders, obey safety instructions and promptly report flood incidents and other emergencies to the appropriate authorities.
