A fire outbreak has razed a furniture and plank workshop at Rashmat Furniture Workshop, along Akerebiata–Sobi Road, Ilorin, Kwara State, shortly after electricity was reportedly restored in the area early Sunday.

The incident occurred beside Winners Church, opposite Abattoir Market, with the inferno destroying the workshop before firefighters arrived at the scene.

The Kwara State Fire Service said it received a distress call at 5:37 a.m. and immediately deployed its personnel to the scene.

According to the service, firefighters discovered on arrival that the entire workshop had been engulfed in flames. Security personnel manning a nearby building had reportedly noticed the fire and raised the alarm.

The firefighters eventually contained the blaze at about 6:18 a.m., preventing it from spreading to an adjoining building and causing further damage to neighbouring properties.

Although the workshop was completely destroyed, the service said the swift intervention of its personnel averted a potentially wider disaster.

Preliminary information gathered at the scene indicated that the fire started shortly after electricity was restored in the area. Combustible materials, including foam and wooden planks, reportedly contributed to the rapid spread of the flames.

The service, however, said the exact cause of the incident remained subject to further investigation.

The Chief Fire Officer, CFS Alabi Muhammed, commended the firefighters for their prompt response and for preventing the fire from spreading to the adjoining building.

He urged furniture makers, carpenters and other business owners who handle combustible materials to prioritise fire prevention by ensuring that electrical installations were safe, flammable materials were properly stored and suitable fire extinguishers were provided at their workplaces.

Alabi also advised residents and business owners to report fire outbreaks immediately, stressing that early notification would give firefighters a better chance of containing fires, minimising damage and protecting lives and property.

The Public Relations Officer of the Kwara State Fire Service, PFO Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to responding promptly to emergencies and safeguarding lives and property across the state.
