The administrative building of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) in Lagos has been razed down by fire. The cause of the inferno which started in the early hours of Tuesday is however yet to be ascertained. Fire fighters from FAAN battled for hours to curtail the unfortunate incident which also created a gridlock as motorists and other commuters found it difficult to pass through roads leading into and out of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Lagos airport. Most passengers who had early flights while the inferno raged had to abandon vehicles that brought them to trek to the terminal buildings as a result of the traffic. When Daily Sun visited the site of the incident, there was an heavy presence of Police and other security agencies trying to maintain law and order while fire fighters battle to curtail the inferno. Workers were however evacuated to safety even as access into the building was denied to anyone except rescue workers. A source at theLagos airport told Daily Sun that sabotage cannot be ruled out of the fire outbreak which destroyed staff files at the administrative blocks owing to an ongoing staff audit exercise which may lead to a mass purge of as workers without requisite qualifications. Spokeswoman for FAAN, Ms. Henriata Yakubu in a statement said “a fire incident at the headquarters in Lagos today April 11, 2017 affected some offices, is being investigated right now to find out the cause of the outbreak.”
“The fire department, in collaboration with the Lagos State Fire Department and other security agencies however responded swiftly by curtailing the spread of the fire, as normalcy is being restored already,” Yakubu said.
“FAAN will like to assure travelers, airport users and the general public that the incident did not affect operations at any airport in any way as normal operations continue unhindered,” she added.
