At least, 12 shops were razed late on Thursday evening in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, and goods worth millions of naira were destroyed.

The inferno, which reportedly began at 10:30p.m., occurred at Block A, No. 64 Mayegun Cement Store Market, Araromi, Agodi Gate.

The General Manager, Oyo State Fire Service, Mr Yemi Akinyinka, who confirmed the incident, said the fire was caused by power surge. He added that no life was lost.

“The agency’s control room received the distressed call at exactly 11:02 pm on Thursday, 10th April 2025. The fire personnel promptly deployed to the scene of the fire incident.

“On arrival, we met some lock-up shops well lit and we swiftly swung into action and restricted the fire from spreading to other nearby shops.

“The fire affected 12 shops out of a large number of shops and we were able to save properties worth billions of naira in the market.

“The fire was as a result of an upsurge in electricity which ignited nearby combustible materials,” Akinyinka stated.
