Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji has called for the use of advanced surveillance technologies, drones and data analytics to strengthen border control and combat smuggling.
Nnaji made the call yesterday when he visited the Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, at the Nigeria Customs Headquarters in Abuja.
He noted that technology-driven customs operations, leveraging AI, blockchain and automation to enhance efficiency, transparency and security in trade facilitation, would go a long way in solving Nigeria’s border challenges.
During the meeting, they explored opportunities for collaboration in key areas such as renewable energy solutions for customs facilities, implementing solar mini grids and energy-efficient systems to power customs offices and border posts sustainably.
The Minister noted that use of local content development in Customs equipment as well as encouraging the adoption of indigenous technology and innovations in customs operations and logistics was apt.
“The importance of capacity building and research collaboration, partnering on research and development to drive technological advancements in customs management and trade compliance cannot be overemphasised.
“This engagement highlights the role of science, technology and innovation in transforming Nigeria’s trade and border management systems for greater efficiency and sustainability,” he stated.
