FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup: Flamingos can down Brazil, says Edo Sports adviser

FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup

Edo State’s Special Adviser on Grassroots Sports Mobilisation, Hon. Frank Ilaboya, has said the Flamingos’ march to the semi-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco shows why talent must be hunted at the grassroots, among boys and girls alike.

The Nigerian girls edged Venezuela 1-0 in a tense quarter-final last night, setting up a semi-final clash with Brazil on Wednesday.

Ilaboya, who works under Governor Monday Okpebholo, congratulated the team on behalf of millions of Nigerians. He said the governor’s push to scout raw talent across Edo State must be extended to the girl child.

He argued that girls can only be steered away from societal vices if they are engaged early, especially through sports.

“This opportunity created by His Excellency for grassroots sports department must be fully extended to the girl child by engaging them early through constructive sports activities,” said Ilaboya, a former Chairman of the Edo State Football Association.

He commended Okpebholo for creating a specialised department for grassroots sports, adding that his job is to change the narrative by combing every corner of the state for talents who will make Edo and Nigeria proud.

“We are putting together a comprehensive program that will bring Edo State back to her dominance in age grade tournaments,” he said.

Ilaboya pointed to the Flamingos’ campaign so far, including a 3-1 win over defending champions North Korea in the group stage, as proof that the team has what it takes to go all the way.

He is backing them to beat Brazil on Wednesday.

“With what we have seen of these girls so far, defeating Brazil is not impossible. These young girls have exhibited strong character, resilience and great determination and these are the ingredients of Champions.

“This is why I am confident of victory over the Samba Girls come on Wednesday. If they put up the same scintillating performance displayed against the defending Champions, North Korea, who they brushed aside 3-1, I can see Brazil falling,” he added.
