The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has settled a key question hanging over Nigerian basketball’s new leadership insisting that Col. Sam Ahmedu (retd) faces no regulatory barrier to serving on the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Board.
In an October 19, 2026 letter to NBBF President Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha, FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis confirmed that Ahmedu has sat on FIBA bodies since 1997, making him the most senior Nigerian in the world governing body’s structure, according to the letter.
The clarification comes days after the NBBF elective congress of October 15, which produced a new board for the 2026-2030 term, and it adds a fresh reference point to the debate over Ahmedu’s role in the administration of the sport at home.
FIBA said its regulatory framework places no impediment on Ahmedu’s service on the NBBF Board. Ahmedu is currently President of FIBA Africa Zone 3 and an Executive Committee member of FIBA Africa.

The letter also congratulated Mustapha and the newly elected board members, and welcomed the federation’s stated commitment to good governance and to elections conducted in line with its constitution and applicable FIBA regulations. The world body further acknowledged the work of the outgoing board led by Engr. Ahmadu Musa Kida.
With Ahmedu’s eligibility now expressly confirmed, attention turns to how his decades of experience and international standing can be put to use.
His inclusion on the board, supporters argue, would help maintain a strong link between Nigerian basketball and the wider international game while supporting efforts to improve the sport at all levels.
For Nigerian basketball, the matter goes beyond a single board seat. It is about making effective use of the experience, relationships and knowledge built over decades of service. FIBA has removed the regulatory question; the challenge now is ensuring that experience continues to benefit the sport.
