FG will track households to measure progress out of poverty — Doro

The Federal Government says it will begin deliberately tracking vulnerable households to determine whether its poverty-reduction interventions are helping beneficiaries achieve economic self-reliance.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard Doro, disclosed this while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday.

Doro said the government’s new approach would focus on monitoring households and measuring their progress rather than simply distributing assistance without assessing its impact.

“We have a system where we want to deliberately track poverty,” he said.

His comments followed the launch of the $1 billion Renewed Hope Social Protection Programme, which includes the Household Prosperity and Empowerment Social Protection Project (HOPE-SP).

The initiative is expected to strengthen coordination between humanitarian assistance, social protection and poverty-reduction efforts while placing individual households at the centre of government interventions.

The HOPE-SP programme targets about 7.6 million vulnerable households nationwide.

Eligible beneficiaries are expected to receive a one-off digital shock-response transfer of ₦40,000. Beneficiaries must be registered on the National Social Register and validated using their National Identification Numbers.

The minister said the tracking mechanism would help the government determine whether beneficiaries were progressing towards sustainable livelihoods and identify areas where additional support may be required.
