Vice President Of The Nigeria Basketball Federation, Nbbf, Babs Ogunade On Tuesday Stated That The Federal Government Is Playing Double Standard In The Area Of Sports Development By Focusing More On Football To The Detriment Of Other Sports.
Ogunade While Reacting To A Question On The Preparadness Of The Nigeria Senior Men’s Team Ahead Of The Afrobasket 2025 Qualifiers In Which D’tigers Will Participate In From Friday 23Rd – 25Th February In Egypt Noted That It Is Sad That The Nbbf Is Still Awaiting Funds From The Ministry Of Sports.
“The Nbbf Has Submitted Its List Of Players For The Afrobasket 2025 Qualifiers But As I Speak With You, The Nbbf Is Still Waiting For The Funds To Embark On The Qualifiers. It Only Shows How Much Importance Government Attaches To Other Sports While Giving Everything To Football.
“Our Women, D’tigress Have Been Champions Of Africa Four Times In A Row And No Rewards For Them. They Have Qualified For The Olympic Games For The Second Time In A Row (Tokyo 2022 And Paris 2024), Yet No Rewards, No Honours Whereas, The Super Eagles That Won A Silver Medal At The Afcon 2023 Were Rewarded With Cash, Houses, Land And National Honours.”
He Pointed That Other Nigeria Athletes Also Sacrifice And Give Their Best For The Country And Should Be Encouraged Whenever The Need Arises. He Noted That Football Is Just One Sport And That Nigerians Are Excelling In Other Sports And Should Not Be Left Out In The Show Of Appreciation And Making It Possible To Attend Major Events.

Ogunade while reacting to a question on the preparadness of the Nigeria senior men’s team ahead of the AfroBasket 2025 Qualifiers in which D’Tigers will participate in from Friday 23rd – 25th February in Egypt noted that it is sad that the NBBF is still awaiting funds from the Ministry of Sports.
“The NBBF has submitted its list of players for the AfroBasket 2025 Qualifiers but as I speak with you, the NBBF is still waiting for the funds to embark on the Qualifiers. It only shows how much importance government attaches to other sports while giving everything to football.
“Our women, D’Tigress have been champions of Africa four times in a row and no rewards for them. They have qualified for the Olympic Games for the second time in a row (Tokyo 2022 and Paris 2024), yet no rewards, no honours whereas, the Super Eagles that won a silver medal at the AFCON 2023 were rewarded with cash, houses, land and national honours.”
He pointed that other Nigeria athletes also sacrifice and give their best for the country and should be encouraged whenever the need arises. He noted that football is just one sport and that Nigerians are excelling in other sports and should not be left out in the show of appreciation and making it possible to attend major events.
