From Isaac Anumihe, Abuja

The Federal Government has suspended all developments in Federal Housing Authority (FHA) estates in Lugbe, Karu, and Kubwa in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In a statement, the management of the authority said the step is to forestall indiscriminate and illegal developments taking place in the estates.

The management also stated that the directive covers all forms of construction works within the FHA estates in the aforementioned areas.

Going forward, the management directed all developers in the affected estates to report to the office with the following documents: letters of allocation, approved building plans, payment receipts, and all documents to prove ownership, including evidence of change of ownership such as consent letters.

“This pronouncement covers all forms of construction works within the FHA estates in these aforementioned areas.

“Consequently, all developers in these aforementioned estates are to report to the FHA head office at No. 26, Julius Nyerere Crescent, Asokoro, Abuja, from 3 February 2025, with the following documents: letters of allocation, approved building plans, payment receipts, all documents to prove ownership, including evidence of change of ownership such as consent letters,” the FHA said.

Recall that recently, the FHA invested over $50,000 to provide uninterrupted electricity supply for all estates across the nation.

Speaking at the launch of FHA Electricity Distribution Company Limited (EDL) in Abuja, the Managing Director of FHA and Chairman of EDL, Mr Oyetunji Ojo, said the aim of establishing the distribution company is to ensure that occupants of FHA houses enjoy uninterrupted electricity supply.

According to him, the authority has over 50,000 housing units in the country. Therefore, EDL, which is its electricity company, will provide 24-hour electricity supply.

He noted that the authority will take over all the electricity infrastructure from all the distribution companies because the authority installed them.

Ojo stated that the FHA has applied for and obtained a licence from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). It has also written to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and other distribution companies across the country to hand over all the infrastructure in all FHA estates.

The FHA MD lamented that the authority’s headquarters in Abuja spends over N5 million monthly on electricity bills. With the coming on board of its electricity company, the load will reduce.

He also noted that the FHA will venture into electricity generation using solar, hydro, wind, and sewage.

Ojo used the occasion to appeal to Nigerians to exercise patience with the president, as he is doing a lot to improve the lives of citizens.

He explained that if the president had not liberalised electricity generation and distribution through the enactment of the Electricity Act, 2023, corporate bodies and individuals would not have ventured into the electricity business.
