The Federal Government and Lagos State Government have outlined plans to tackle regulatory, technical and operational bottlenecks affecting electricity supply in the state, with a steering committee to drive implementation of proposed reforms.

Minister of Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, announced the implementation framework at the Ministerial Implementation Retreat with Federal Authorities on the Clean Lagos Electricity Market (CLEM), hosted by the Lagos State Government.

Tegbe said the committee, comprising relevant power sector stakeholders, would coordinate the implementation of decisions reached at the retreat and ensure that the resolutions translated into concrete improvements for residents and businesses.

He said the engagement was designed to identify practical interventions, with attention to immediate supply challenges and longer-term measures to strengthen the electricity market.

The minister identified the regulatory framework and technical and operational constraints as critical areas requiring coordinated action, stressing that Lagos’ position as Nigeria’s major commercial hub made stronger cooperation between federal and state institutions essential.

He said the Federal Government would work with Lagos and other stakeholders to expand access to reliable electricity, support economic growth and improve residents’ quality of life.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the discussions as frank and productive, saying the retreat provided an opportunity for stakeholders to confront the sector’s challenges and agree on practical solutions.

He welcomed the participation of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and other power sector institutions.

Sanwo-Olu said the success of the Clean Lagos Electricity Market would be measured by its impact on consumers, emphasising that decisions reached at the retreat must produce tangible improvements in electricity supply to homes, businesses and industries.

The governor said the initiative aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of a reliable and sustainable electricity system, with Lagos expected to play a leading role in advancing reforms.
