The Federal Government has commended the North East Development Commission (NEDC) over move to deploy 10,000 electric vehicles and tricycles to improve transportation in the zone.
Minister of Regional Development, Alhaji Abubakar Momoh, gave the commendation on Friday, during the inspection of the electric vehicles and tricycles ready for distribution to the six states in the North East.
“I’m impressed as we are not disappointed to see this project seeing the light of the day. Nearly 10,000 e-vehicles and tricycles are assembled and will soon be distributed,” Momoh said.
The minister said the intervention aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s mission to develop infrastructure across regions in the country.
The minister and his team also inspected charging the plant for electric vehicle and tricycles, road projects, construction of the commission’s corporate headquarters in Maiduguri and the State Office among others.

Momoh explained that the inspection was to assess the level of project completion. He disclosed that the president would be briefed and invited for the commissioning of all the projects after their completion.
NEDC Managing Director, Alhaji Mohammed Alkali, said the electric mobility project included buses, tricycles and taxis, with charging infrastructure.
He also said the electric vehicles Mini Assembly Plant was designed to promote local assembly, develop technical capacity, facilitate technology transfer and create employment opportunities for young people in the North East.
Alkali said the project would also strengthen the emerging electric mobility ecosystem in the region and create opportunities for skills development and enterprise.
He disclosed that the initiative aligned with the North East Stabilisation and Development Master Plan (NESDMP), particularly its focus on environmental protection, purposeful infrastructure, including transportation, and regional connectivity.
