The Federal Government has dismissed reports suggesting that it plans to increase electricity tariffs, insisting that there is no proposal to raise charges for any category of consumers connected to the national grid.
The clarification was made in a statement released on Saturday by the Special Adviser to the President on Power Infrastructure in the Office of the Vice President, Sadiq Wanka, following media reports that interpreted his recent remarks as signalling an imminent tariff review.
According to Wanka, the reports misrepresented comments he made during a presentation at the Asharami Square 3.0 event held in Lagos on July 22, 2026.
“There is no planned tariff hike for any grid consumer across any service band. The government remains committed to protecting vulnerable households through continued tariff support,” he said.
He explained that his presentation focused on investment opportunities in Nigeria’s electricity sector and the Federal Government’s ongoing power sector reforms aimed at attracting private capital across the electricity value chain.
Wanka noted that he merely reiterated the tariff policy outlined in the National Integrated Electricity Policy, which was finalised in December 2024 and approved by the Federal Executive Council in May 2025.

He explained that the policy provides for a gradual transition to cost-reflective electricity tariffs, a framework that has already been implemented for Band A customers, while maintaining government support for consumers in other service bands.
“For all other consumer bands, there is no plan to remove subsidies. Rather, the Government is exploring how to deliver value and support more efficiently,” the statement added.
The presidential aide also highlighted the proposed Power Consumer Assistance Fund (PCAF), established under the Electricity Act 2023, as the government’s preferred mechanism for delivering targeted subsidies directly to vulnerable electricity users.
According to him, the initiative is designed to channel financial support through consumers’ electricity accounts or other verified identity-linked platforms, improving transparency in subsidy administration while boosting investor confidence in the sector.
Wanka further commended the media for its role in informing the public but urged journalists to ensure accurate reporting of government policies to avoid creating unnecessary concern among electricity consumers.
He added that the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains committed to implementing reforms that strengthen the power sector while protecting vulnerable households through sustained subsidy support.
