The Federal Government has made citizenship education a compulsory subject in both primary and secondary schools.

Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre-Issa Onilu, represented by the Executive Director on Publicity and Mass Mobilisation of the agency, Theresa Maduekwe, disclosed this during a sensitisation of the new charter and National Anthem procedures in Owerri, Imo State.

 Maduekwe also said that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the establishment of the National Values Brigade in all primary and secondary schools in the country.

Its establishment, she noted, will help raise model citizens among Nigerian children as ambassadors of values, adding that FEC also the change of name of War Against Indiscipline (WAI) brigade to Citizens Value Brigade.

Giving reasons for the change, Maduekwe said: “The WAI Brigade of the NOA was established during the military era but has remained an anathema as a democratic government cannot be seen to be waging war against its citizens over indiscipline.”

 Speaking also during the occasion, the State director of NOA, StellaMaris Igwe disclosed that the agency will commence the training of elected public holders to enable them be held accountable for their shortcomings.
