…Targets stronger, more reliable power supply
The federal government has commenced construction of a new National Control Centre for the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) in Osogbo, Osun State.
It replaces the existing 64-year-old facility that has become inadequate for managing Nigeria’s increasingly complex electricity grid.
The groundbreaking ceremony was performed by Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by his Senior Special Assistant (Legal), with the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, in attendance.
The new ultra-modern facility is expected to strengthen the country’s capacity to monitor, manage and coordinate the national grid, as the government seeks to improve electricity reliability across the country.
Speaking at the ceremony, Shettima said the upgrade was necessary because Nigeria could no longer depend on outdated infrastructure to operate a modern interconnected electricity network.
He said reliable electricity remained central to the federal government’s developmental agenda, describing power as the foundation of an economy capable of supporting manufacturers, small businesses, hospitals and schools.
“The National Control Centre is where that reliability is protected. Nigeria cannot run a modern, interconnected grid with the tools of yesterday,” he said.
The federal government said the new centre would provide NISO with modern infrastructure required to manage the evolving electricity system and support more reliable grid operations.
