The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to curbing the needless loss of lives on Nigerian waterways.
Speaking during the official handover and distribution of life jackets in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, the Minister, represented by Mrs. S. Akon, Director of Human Resources at the Ministry, emphasised the government’s ongoing efforts to promote safety across riverine communities.
“Following the distribution of life jackets in Niger and Bayelsa States a few weeks ago, and the recent handover in Anambra State, our campaign continues simultaneously today in Akwa Ibom and Ogun States,” Akon said.
“This strategic initiative will proceed to Lagos, Delta, Benue, Zamfara, and Kwara States. Our goal is to instill a culture of safety on our waterways, especially in riverine communities where water transport is essential to daily life.”
Akon added that the initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that:
“In alignment with the national development agenda, the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy has prioritised life-saving interventions to effect change. We are committed to ending unnecessary loss of lives on our waters.”
Delivering his keynote address, the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, represented by the State Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Anthony Luke, described the life jackets as symbolic and impactful.
“They symbolise hope, protection, and the value we place on human life. We, as state governments, are proud to receive this gesture,” he stated.
Also commenting, the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, represented by Fidelis Agbahi, General Manager of Ports and Environmental Services, commended the initiative.
“This gesture demonstrates a clear commitment to the safety and security of our waterways,” he said.
Oyebamiji also expressed appreciation to the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and the Akwa Ibom State Government for their collaborative efforts in planning and executing the initiative. He urged water users to utilise the jackets responsibly and ensure they are well maintained.
The event also featured a practical demonstration by NIWA staff on how to properly wear a life jacket. In attendance were associations of boat operators, regular boat commuters, and community leaders from the region.
