The Federal Government has added 640 megawatts (MW) to Nigeria’s transmission capacity following the commissioning of six substations in Kano and Katsina states, in a move aimed at strengthening electricity delivery to homes and businesses.
The projects comprise four substations in Kano State, which collectively provide 544MW of additional wheeling capacity, and two substations in Katsina State, contributing another 96MW to the national grid.
In Kano, the four substations at Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata and Dan-Agundi were commissioned on Wednesday, while the two 60MVA, 132/33kV substations in Kankia Local Government Area of Katsina State were commissioned on Friday.
The additional capacity is expected to strengthen the transmission network and improve its ability to evacuate and distribute available electricity to consumers across the two states and neighbouring areas.
Speaking at the Katsina commissioning ceremony, the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the projects reflected President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving the country’s electricity infrastructure under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Mr President’s Renewed Hope Agenda recognises that economic ambition requires dependable infrastructure,” Tegbe said.

He added that investments in power infrastructure would help create a stronger foundation for businesses, employment and economic growth.
The minister said the Kankia substation would improve the network’s capacity to distribute available electricity across Katsina State and its environs, with potential benefits for commercial activities and household welfare.
He urged residents to protect the facilities against vandalism and promptly report suspicious activities to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) or security agencies.
“These assets serve your businesses, your neighbours and your children; safeguarding them protects your community’s future,” he said.
Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, described the project as a significant investment in the state’s electricity infrastructure, noting that reliable power supply could support industrial development, economic expansion and improved public services.
Radda thanked President Tinubu for approving the project and commended the Federal Ministry of Power and TCN for its completion.
The commissioning ceremonies were attended by officials of the Federal Ministry of Power, TCN, Kano Electricity Distribution Company and the Katsina State Government.
