•Uche Ogbodo and Bobby Maris

The highly publicised breakdown of the marriage of Nollywood actress, Uche Ogbodo, to her younger husband, Bobby Maris, which happened recently, has once again ignited intense conversation across the entertainment industry.

While the concept of an older woman marrying a younger man, popularly termed an “age-gap” union or the “cougar” dynamic, is increasingly celebrated for challenging traditional marital norms, the reality, under the glare of showbiz, has often told a more turbulent story.

•Anita Joseph and MC Fish

For these high-profile Nigerian female celebrities, marrying a younger partner began as a defiant fairytale but sadly crumbed under the weight of pressure, finances, and irreconcilable differences within just a few years.

Anita Joseph and MC Fish

Nollywood actress Anita Joseph and her younger husband, Fisayo Olagunju, widely known as MC Fish, were once the poster couple for their public display of affection on social media. Despite the initial backlash regarding their age difference when they tied the knot in February 2020, they consistently brushed off critics, with MC Fish frequently defending his decision to marry an older woman.

•Kaffy and Joseph

However, the curtain fell on their five-year union in December 2025, when Anita officially confirmed their split, citing deep reflection and pain. The separation quickly turned messy online, with rumours emerging that the actress had single-handedly funded the marriage. MC Fish hit back publicly, saying that while he had no regrets about marrying at 27 because of the initial happiness and respect, false narratives about his financial dependence were insulting to his 15-year career as a professional hypeman.

Kaffy and Joseph Ameh

When the undisputed queen of dance, Kafayat Shafau (Kaffy), married Joseph Ameh, a talented music director and drummer for the P-Square band, it felt like a match made in creative heaven. Joseph was several years younger than Kaffy, but their mutual passion for the arts initially bridged any generational gap.

The union lasted nearly a decade and produced two children before it officially dissolved. Opening up about the split, Kaffy revealed that the marriage had become a toxic environment of enablement, infidelity, and emotional exhaustion. She famously noted that separating was a necessary step for individual growth, stating that she felt she was holding him back from finding his true path while losing her own destiny.

Ann Njemanze and Silver Ojieson

Veteran actress, Ann Njemanze, famous for her iconic titular role in the 1990s classic Domitilla, found love again years after her divorce from actor, Segun Arinze.

In November 2013, she married Silver Ojieson, a university lecturer, who was noticeably younger than her, in a private ceremony.

Unfortunately, the marriage became one of the shortest-lived unions in celebrity history. It lasted less than eight months, collapsing completely by July 2014. The split was marred by heavy allegations of intense domestic violence and physical abuse, which ultimately forced the actress to walk out of the relationship for her own safety and well-being.

Uche Ogbodo and Bobby Maris

For years, actress Uche Ogbodo defended her relationship with Bobby Maris against critics who questioned their age difference. The actress repeatedly maintained that happiness mattered more than public opinion, and the couple eventually formalised their relationship in a colourful traditional wedding in January 2023. They are blessed with two adorable children.

Their social media pages were filled with affectionate videos, family moments and public displays of love, giving the impression of a stable home.

However, signs of trouble recently emerged after the couple reportedly unfollowed each other on Instagram, while Bobby shared cryptic messages that many interpreted as confirmation that the marriage had broken down. While Uche openly admitted that she’s done with the union over allegations of narcissism.

Underlying pressures

Relationship experts have consistently argued that age alone is rarely responsible for the collapse of a marriage. Instead, they point to communication, emotional maturity, shared values, financial expectations, trust and the ability to manage public pressure as the real determinants of a successful union.
