There are some songs that don’t strive to impress. Instead, they simply find a listener and stay there, enduring. This is what Fegor WLMS has managed to do with the song “PLEASURE.”
The song begins with writing that is less a love song and more a confessional. Fegor WLMS does not strive to make grand statements. Instead, he makes the story all about everyday details, the act of sharing a meal, the act of quiet time together, and the precise moment at which something shifts from being pleasurable to being permanent.
Phrases like “her jollof goes with his Fanta” have more impact than any grand metaphor because they’re so specific and honest. This is the mark of a confident writer, and it’s a confidence that Fegor WLMS carries through. His delivery matches the honesty of the writing, never forcing the vocals or the emotions beyond what he seems to feel.
Not all lines succeed to this level of standard. There are times when the text reverts to a more predictable form rather than trying to be more precise. This is a flaw in an otherwise good performance.
The production, managed by Zainab Jinadu, better known by her professional name Zeezbeatz, and Daniel Dembow, does not compete with Fegor WLMS but rather complements it. Zeezbeatz brings a level of warmth to the beat that mirrors Fegor WLMS’s tone and style. She does this without making it a song meant to be danced to, which is exactly what this form of songwriting calls for. In the final parts of the song, there are times when a more daring path could have been taken with the production. However, this does not apply to a flaw but rather a positive attribute.
“PLEASURE” does not ask for anything from its listener. It simply exists, conveys its intended meaning, and trusts that this will be enough. For Fegor WLMS, at this point in time, it is.
