The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Primary Health Care Development Board says it has commenced the process of taking over management of Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities from the area councils.

Acting Executive Secretary of the board, Dr. Mathew Ashikeni, said in an interview, in Abuja, on Tuesday.

He said that the action was to enable the board to deliver health care services effectively and timely in FCT.

Ashikeni said that the board, health secretariat, and legal service are currently working on a document to be submitted to the National Assembly for legislative action in bringing PHC’s management under “one roof”.

He said that once the bill is passed into law and the board takes over the management of PHC facilities in the territory, there will be effectiveness and efficiency in running or delivering health care services in FCT.

According to him, the management of PHC facilities are currently in the hands of the board and the area councils which still difficult to manage unless they are being brought under “one roof”.

“Once the transfer of PHC facilities from the area councils to the board is done the issue of infrastructure, maintenance and construction of new facilities as well as provision of manpower will be done solely by the primary health care board.

“Supervision, posting, deployment and discipline of health workers will rest in the primary health development board.

“As soon as the law is in place, we can begin to have a comprehensive monitoring and supervision of our health workers to ensure they live up to the expectations in terms of quality service delivery to the people” he said. (NAN)
