The candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) in the forthcoming Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election, Obinna Simon, has promised to prioritise education, security, skills acquisition and financial transparency if elected into office.
Speaking to newsmen in Abuja on Sunday, he said that he is mentally, psychologically and physically more prepared than the other candidates for the position, insisting that the incumbent chairman will not be a serious threat to him.
According to him; “I have been involved in politics for over 20 years. Though maybe not from Abuja, I have been involved in politics for close to 20 years. AMAC has enormous resources that the state at which it is today should have been far gone because of poor management.
“As AMAC chairman, transparency and accountability is one of my key cardinals. As AMAC chairman, I and my team will publish the federal allocation from the federal government so that everybody will know that this is what came in the month. The IGR in the month will also be published so that people will know the resources that are coming in and what we are also using the resources to achieve.

“We will not mismanage the council funds, just like we are seeing today. All of us know that currently they are investigating the six Area Councils, over N100 billion mismanagement of funds. That will not happen during my time.
“On education, I was teaching before even joining comedy. I taught for over seven years in primary and secondary schools. I made it very, very clear that I will, on assuming office, declare state of emergency on education in AMAC. Schools were on strike in AMAC for over five months.
“And then they patched it up. They resumed and as I speak to you now, they are on strike again. So as a teacher, the welfare of teachers is very key in education. It’s when somebody is comfortable that you teach children very well. So education is very important to me,” he said.
He also promised to secure AMAC, stressing: “Insecurity in AMAC is very easy. My administration will ensure that we work closely with traditional rulers. I know the role traditional rulers played back then in Katsina State. Every security meeting, all the traditional rulers will come to the Area Council for security meeting,” he said.
