The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Kasim Mohammed of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as Chairman-elect of Gwagwalada Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), following Saturday’s election.

Returning Officer Philip Akpen announced that Mohammed secured 22,165 votes to defeat Yahaya Shehu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 17,788 votes.

He confirmed that the PDP candidate met all constitutional requirements to be declared winner.

Akpen described the exercise as “peaceful and smooth,” despite the keenly contested race and heightened political interest in the council poll.

The PDP’s victory was built on strong performances across key wards, reflecting the party’s sustained grassroots mobilisation in the area.

Although reports of voter intimidation and allegations of vote-buying emerged in some polling units, INEC maintained that the final outcome reflected the will of the electorate.

Following the declaration, jubilant supporters took to the streets of Gwagwalada in celebration, as political attention shifts to the opposition’s next move after the FCT polls.
