From Isaac Anumihe, Abuja
Following the directive by the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike to rid Abuja of scavengers and miscreants, popularly known as ‘Baba bola’, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) yesterday, arrested 20 scavengers.
Speaking to newsmen in Abuja, yesterday, the Commandant of the FCT Command, Olusola Odumosu,
said that consequent upon the directive, the FCT Command of NSCDC arrested 20 suspects.
He said that they would undergo comprehensive interview and profiling processes and would be handed over to Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) for further action.
“Subsequently, they will be handed over to the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) for possible further prosecution.
These intensified measures serve a dual purpose: deterring potential criminals and ensuring the apprehension of those responsible for these unlawful activities.
“Through these actions, we are sending an unequivocal and resolute message that criminal behaviour will no longer be tolerated within our jurisdiction.
The proactive strategy we have embraced underscores the unswerving commitment of the government to address the concerns of its citizens. We are steadfastly dedicated to safeguarding the integrity of critical national assets and infrastructure throughout the FCT Metropolis” he said.
The commandant warned that from now onward, nobody under FCT bridge would be spared.
“Our collective effort, combined with the support of the community and relevant agencies, will undoubtedly contribute to a safer and more secure Federal Capital Territory’ Odumosu, noted.
The commandant explained that the corps has received reports of various attacks in the night of Abuja residents. Most of them are stabbed and their belongings collected from them.
He called on FCT residents not to patronize them so as to discourage them from doing the business
“They pretend to be destitute only to metamorphose into criminals at unholy hours” he stated.
Recall that early last week, Wike directed all the security agencies to rid FCT of criminals.
Wike said he would work with all security agencies in the FCT and provide them with the necessary tools and logistics to rid the city of all criminals. According to him, FCT is supposed to be the safest city in the country, adding, however, that the city is no longer safe.
