The Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Justice Hussein Baba-Yusuf, has charged Legal Officers of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to embrace values of integrity, compassion, and excellence in the discharge of their duties.

Justice Baba-Yusuf gave the charge in his goodwill message at the opening ceremony of a training programme for NYSC Legal Officers in Abuja on Monday.

Represented by Hon Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme, the FCT Chief Judge reminded the legal officers that their role goes beyond mere legal representation to championing human rights, defending the vulnerable, and serving as pillars of Nigerian democracy.

“As legal officers, you are the guardians of justice, and your dedication to the noble profession is crucial in shaping the future of our nation. Your role goes beyond mere legal representation; you are the champions of human rights, the defenders of the vulnerable, and the pillars of our democracy.

“As you undergo this training, I urge you to embrace the values of integrity, compassion, and excellence. Embrace the challenges and opportunities that come with this noble profession. Remember that the law is a powerful tool for change, and your expertise can make a meaningful difference in the lives of many.

“As you navigate the complexities of legal practice, always keep in mind the importance of ethics, professionalism, and empathy. Be the beacons of hope and justice that our society needs.

“I commend the organizers of this program for their efforts in equipping you with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in your roles. I encourage you all to make the most of this opportunity and to continue striving for excellence in your service to the nation,” he noted.

Earlier, the Director-General of the scheme, Brigadier-General YD Ahmed, expressed happiness that the posting of Legal Officers has enhanced efficiency in the areas of legal advice, litigation, and supervision of the Corps Legal Aid Scheme (CLAS).

Represented by the NYSC Director of Procurement, Chukwu Chinwendu, the DG said: “As part of measures to strengthen the unit for optimal performance, management posted Legal Officers to States and FCT Secretariats. The take-off of the Area Offices in January 2020 necessitated the posting of Legal Officers as part of the full complement of the staff required for the smooth operations of the Scheme at the Area level.

“Reports reaching me, which I am happy to mention, is that the posting of Legal Officers has enhanced efficiency in the areas of legal advice, litigation, and supervision of CLAS,” he noted.
