Singer Chidozie Godsfavour Ugochinyere, popularly known as Fave, has spoken about the challenges female artistes face in achieving success in the Nigerian music industry.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Afropolitan podcast, Fave said female artistes are often judged on factors beyond their musical talent.
According to her, sex appeal, appearance and fashion choices can influence how female artistes are perceived, with their looks sometimes receiving attention before their music.
She described the situation as a challenge for women in the industry, arguing that their musical abilities should receive greater focus.
The music star pointed out that male artists aren’t held to the same standard.
She said, “It is harder for female artists to blow. Female artists aren’t measured by talent but by what they wear. If your tummy isn’t flat… It is never really about the music; it is more about people’s sexual desires or their fantasies about you.
“And I think that right there is a problem, because it becomes more about how decently you are dressed before people listen to you. But when it comes to men, they aren’t held to that same standard.”
Fave claimed that despite the disadvantageous situation female artists find themselves in in the Nigerian music industry, they perform better than their male counterparts.
