Fans descend on journalist after Kwara United-Kano Pillars encounter

By Lawrence Agbo

Tension broke out in Kwara State on Sunday after some young fans allegedly attacked a reporter following Kwara United vs. Kano Pillars’ Matchday 26 match.

The incident occurred after a 1-1 draw between both teams at the Rashidi Yekini Mainbowl of the George Innih Stadium, Ilorin.

The reporter, Sodiq Adebara, was wrongly recognized as one of the match officials who officiated the hotly contested encounter.

Controversial decisions by the referees in the closing stages of the match sparked outrage among the young fans, who reacted angrily to what they perceived as unfair calls.

Witnesses revealed that without the prompt action of Abdul Momoh, Toyin Saheed, Mallam Mustapha Abubakar, Bolaji Yaqub, and Mallam Ayodeji Ismail, the chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kwara State chapter, the situation might have worsened into a more serious crisis.

Their swift response reduced tensions and ensured the safety of the journalist.

The angry fans had complained about what they called dubious officiating that affected the match’s result.

There had been no official reports of injuries at the time this report was filed. Since then, stakeholders have demanded composure and urged supporters to always use legal and peaceful channels to air their complaints.
