The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has renewed its push to tighten security across the country’s airports, rolling out a series of reforms aimed at curbing unauthorised access, touting, passenger misconduct, theft, extortion, vandalism and fraudulent activities that have long threatened the safety and integrity of aviation operations in Nigeria.
The campaign is being driven by the Authority’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, whose administration has moved to restore discipline, strengthen security and instill a culture of responsibility across the nation’s airports since she assumed office.
Kuku has repeatedly stressed that modern airports must be secure, orderly, and built around the needs of passengers, a philosophy that has shaped the current wave of reforms targeting both systemic security gaps and the everyday lapses that undermine airport operations.
Speaking on a recent edition of the Authority’s flagship media programme, ‘FAAN in Focus’, Kuku reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to strengthening safety at Nigerian airports, calling on passengers and airport staff alike to be more vigilant and deliberate in following established security protocols.
She issued a pointed warning against patronising louts, urging travellers to deal only with authorised airport personnel and accredited service providers. Eliminating louting, she said, remains a central focus of FAAN’s campaign to stamp out illicit activity and protect the integrity of airport operations.
Rather than depending solely on reactive enforcement, she said FAAN has adopted a strategy built around deterrence, accountability, and operational efficiency. Security personnel are being equipped with improved tools, operational procedures are being reinforced, and internal oversight mechanisms are receiving closer attention.
The administration has also turned to wearable technology to boost transparency and professionalism among frontline staff. Plans are underway to deploy body-worn cameras for Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel, a measure expected to improve accountability, create objective records of interactions with passengers, discourage misconduct, and bolster public confidence in airport security.
FAAN’s renewed strategy places strong emphasis on collaboration among the various agencies operating within airport environments. Closer coordination between Aviation Security personnel, law enforcement, intelligence services, and other stakeholders has improved information sharing and strengthened operational responses to threats. While enforcement remains a critical tool, FAAN maintains that lasting airport safety cannot be achieved through enforcement alone. This understanding has pushed the Authority to reinvigorate its public communication efforts, placing passenger education and awareness at the centre of its safety agenda.
For many travellers, security checks such as baggage inspections, identity verification, and access control procedures can feel like an inconvenience.
FAAN argues that each of these measures is designed to prevent incidents with potentially far-reaching consequences, and that explaining the reasoning behind them helps passengers see security as a shared responsibility rather than a bureaucratic hurdle.
Perhaps the most lasting legacy of the Kuku administration, according to the Authority, will be its deliberate effort to build a culture of integrity across Nigeria’s airports. The administration has prioritised continuous staff training, ethical leadership, transparent disciplinary processes, and sustained professional development, on the understanding that lasting security depends not only on infrastructure and enforcement but on the values embedded in day-to-day operations.
By tackling illicit activity while simultaneously educating the public, FAAN says it is pursuing a balanced approach that combines enforcement with engagement, an approach it credits with producing an airport environment where security officers are empowered, technology supports accountability, passengers are better informed, and illegal activities face growing resistance.
