The late politician son, Uzodinma Okpara, who is the CEO of Michael Okpara Foundation, during a programme on Arise Television declared that his fathere choose to remain poor because he wanted food to be on the table of those he governed back then.
The younger Okpara had recalled his encounter with his father when he visited him in his two room apartment in Dublin Ireland in 1973. ” My father had told me: ‘ I know you would be wondering that after I have served as premier for over six years, I couldn’t build a house in Nigeria or even have property abroad. The reason is that I want food on the table of the people of Eastern Nigeria.’

Some of them, like Golden Guinea Breweries , Ogbudu Cattle ranch, and Trans Amadi Industrial layouts in PortHarcourt, are still functioning.”
