Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) has urged the federal and state governments to prudently manage tax revenue in practical terms in other to boost the confidence of taxpayers and encourage those who are defiant to start paying.
At its 26th pre-conference presidential chat in its corporate headquarters in Lagos, the president of the Institute’s Council, Mr. Samuel Agbeluyi, said it is only when people see a positive impact of their taxes in their daily lives that they would pay their taxes without coercion.
The CITN chief confirmed that tax professionals will do justice to topical issues affecting the country and would come up with sustainable recommendations for economic resuscitation at the conference with the theme, ‘Sustainable Tax Culture and Economic Roadmap For Nation Building’, which is slated for May 13 to 17 in Abuja.
Agbeluyi said the conference would attract 4000 participants including financial experts, corporate administrators and managers, captains of industries, eminent and political leaders of thought. He added that there would also be sporting activities and other recreational games designed to keep the soul and body fit for work.
“We shall look into fiscal policy adjustment, impact on revenue generation, foreign direct investment and revenue implications. Other topics set for discourse are, ‘Situating the Nigeria Tax Policy within the Global Practice’, ‘Critical Assessment of Revenue Generation at the Sub-Nationals’ and ‘Taxation as an Instrument of economic growth: Impact Assessment of Manufacturing Sector’. At the end, we’re very optimistic to see a significant change in our tax system,” he said.
