Exercise should be treated as a daily supplement for healthy living, not an optional extra, says fitness expert and Chairman of Gategold Nigeria Limited, Sir Goodluck Obi.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos during the week, Sir Obi warned against the rising number of deaths linked to weight-related health issues. He said a consistent daily exercise routine is essential for maintaining good health at every stage of life.

“We lose muscle mass gradually as we age, often without noticing it. This loss of muscle is what leads to reduced strength and the general frailty many associate with older people,” he said.

“A daily exercise routine helps to energize the body, improve circulation, and support overall physical condition. The key is to start gradually, especially for those without the guidance of a qualified gym instructor.”

Sir Obi noted that the body usually gives warning signals before serious health problems develop, but many people ignore them.

“Listen to your body. Fatigue, breathlessness, and persistent aches are often early signs. Acting early through movement and exercise can prevent more serious conditions later,” he explained.

On when to begin exercising, he said the ideal starting point is around age 18, when adulthood is reached. However, he stressed that it is never too late to start.

“There are three main types of exercise: cardio, strength, and aerobics. Everyone, regardless of financial status, should incorporate some form of physical activity into their daily routine. Even 30 minutes a day makes a difference,” he said.

Sir Obi spoke from nearly 20 years of experience in the fitness industry during an interactive session with the media.

As Chairman of Gategold Nigeria Limited, he has overseen the supply and installation of gym equipment for commercial and home users across , Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Abuja.
