The atmosphere was electrifying on January 11, 2026, as the grand finale of the Vwang district peace and unity football tournament took centre stage, with Vwang Central locking horns with defending champions, Turu United. In a thrilling encounter, Turu United edged Vwang Central 1-0 to retain the coveted trophy.
The tournament drew an impressive array of dignitaries from across Plateau State, particularly sons and daughters of the Berom nation. It was designed to promote peace, unity and social cohesion, while also combating drug abuse among youths in Vwang District and Jos South Local Government Area at large.
Addressing the crowd, the sponsor of the tournament, Hon. Gyang Bere, PhD, expressed profound appreciation to the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, for approving and supporting the initiative. He described the governor’s backing as a reflection of his unwavering passion for youth development, sports advancement and peaceful coexistence across the state.
Dr. Bere thanked the governor for standing firmly behind the competition from inception, noting that his commitment to youth empowerment continues to inspire young people across Plateau State. He urged the people of Vwang District and Plateau State at large to rally behind Gov. Mutfwang’s vision to rebuild Plateau State and restore it as the pride of Nigeria.
He also appealed for support for the governor’s recent political alignment, explaining that it was strategically aimed at strengthening unity and fostering social cohesion among Plateau people. According to him, Gov. Mutfwang’s leadership style promotes inclusiveness and harmony, while his alignment with the central government would bring tangible benefits to the state.
Bere further called on youths to shun drug abuse and channel their energy into productive ventures that would promote personal growth and community development. He lamented that drug addiction has ruined many promising lives and urged young people to resist all forms of substance abuse.
He commended the Plateau State Football Association, under the leadership of Hon. Suleiman Yahaya Kwande, for its technical guidance and institutional support; the Vwang Traditional Council, led by His Royal Highness, Da Gyang Balak, for its moral backing; and the chairman of Jos South LGA for his presence and support.
Dr. Bere also thanked the president of the Berom Educational and Cultural Organisation (BECO) Worldwide, Da Gyang Dudu Dalyop, as well as other prominent sons and daughters of Vwang District for their commitment to the success of the tournament, expressing confidence that Vwang would continue to grow as a model of unity and development.
Speaking at the event, the chairman of Jos South LGA, Hon. Silas Patrick Dung, and BECO Worldwide president, Da Gyang Dudu Dalyop, affirmed that the tournament had achieved its objectives of promoting unity, peaceful coexistence and discouraging drug abuse among the youth. They commended Bere for the initiative and encouraged him to sustain the vision of empowering young people through sports.
The organisers announced that preparations for the 2026/2027 edition would commence soon, with efforts aimed at addressing challenges encountered in the last season and making the tournament more inclusive, competitive and attractive.
